Garcia's Agency and Notary got approval for its request for a modest sign at 417 Wyandotte St. in South Bethlehem.

Owner Kevin Garcia was the only applicant to appear before the Historic Conservation District commission Feb. 24 at the Banana Factory.

According to Christine Ussler, the artifact consultant to the Historic Commission, the building is a three-story 1870 Italianate style commercial building.

Italianate architectural style buildings were the dominant style for commercial building in the United State during the 1870s and 1880s. Such buildings feature tall, narrow proportions with embellished cornices and window hoods.

The immediate area on the east side of the 400 block, known as "Palace Row," was upgraded with the help of $650,000 Community Development Block Grant. The 2006 grant was part of Bethlehem's investment in blighted parts of the city.

Palace Row got its nickname in the 1870s, when the commercial buildings on Wyandotte Street served residents of nearby affluent Fountain Hill.

The approval by the Historic Conservation District will be forwarded Bethlehem Council, which usually grants the necessary certificate of appropriateness to allow Garcia to hang his sign.

Garcia said his company represents Nationwide Insurance, Titan Insurance, Progressive Insurance and Infinity Insurance. The company also does notary work, tags, title transfers and title duplicates.

Garcia said he has been in business since August 2013 at the Wyandotte Street location.
