Bethlehem Catholic HS news: Goodbye winter, hello spring
Spring is on the way, we hope. As Bethlehem Catholic students are recovering from an unusually long and cold winter, their thoughts are turning to warmer weather, the last quarter of the school year, the prom and spring sports. Seniors are making their final decisions regarding their plans for next year, and everyone is glad that the snow and difficult last few months are behind us. BECA had some unique issues this winter, caused by a malfunctioning heating system that resulted in more days off than most other schools. However, that didn't stop the somewhat cold student body from accomplishing some exciting goals.
Our winter sports teams all had a good deal of success this year. The wrestling team won its fourth state title and a number of wrestlers placed in the state tournament. Gold medalists were Zeke Moisey, Luke Karam and Jake Riegel. Jose Ortiz took home a silver medal, and Andrew Dunn notched his 100th win and a bronze medal. In addition, Joey Gould earned a fourth place finish and Steven Maloney finished sixth. Mike Labriola and Nick Cortopassi finished the tournament with seventh and eighth, respectively. The nine BECA wrestlers who placed in the state tournament demolished the previous season program best of six and broke the previous record for a class AA coverage-area school.
Girls basketball won its second straight District 11 Class AAA title. The team went on to the state tournament and lost in the second round to Scranton Prep. The boys basketball team ended up losing in a consolation game that ended its hopes of a state tournament appearance. Overall though, a pretty successful winter sports season for the Golden Hawks.
In other news, BECA had a very successful mini THON campaign. The night did not go as planned due to a power outage, but the students still reached their goal. In fact, the goal of $60,000 was exceeded in spite of the shortened evening. All together, students raised $63,614.00 and donations are still coming in. Bethlehem Catholic is more than proud of their accomplishment.
As we move toward graduation, many seniors are making final decisions of where they want to go to college; while some are still waiting to hear about their applications. As we look back, seniors are finally realizing that our high school career is almost over. Four years seems like a long time, but it has moved by us so quickly. The place we've called home for the past four years will soon be just a memory.
The rest of the school is getting ready for spring and the last quarter of the school year. Prom is also on many people's minds. Who is going to ask them? What color dress should I get? There are many things to think about when it comes to prom, especially for the boys. The boys have the difficult task of coming up with a creative way to ask the girl they would like to accompany. No one really knows how or when this started, but it is fun seeing what the boys come up with in the end.
Spring sports are also beginning, but some are having trouble starting due to the snow that remains on the fields. Also BECA's annual auction is scheduled for March 22 and is the school's biggest fundraiser, so come out and show your support. This spring has a lot in store for the Golden Hawks at Bethlehem Catholic.
