Spotlight On: 'Diary' of aspirations at Symphony Hall

"Diary of a Worm, a Spider and a Fly," a live-action musical based on the popular series of children's books by "Click, Clack, Moo" author Doreen Cronin, slides and buzzes its way into the Lehigh Valley, at 2 p.m. March 23, Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. Sixth St., Allentown.

Doddy Gamez, a New York City-based actor, plays the title role of Worm in the production. Gamez studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Los Angeles and New York City. He's been touring with "Diary" since last October.

Wearing a worm-like costume that does not allow much movement of his hands or feet, Gamez works hard to convey the sensibilities of Worm, who just wants to do well at whatever he does.

"The characters are really relate-able," Gamez says in a recent phone interview. "They are each something that every kid can relate to, and that every kid aspires to be.

"Fly wants to be a superhero. Spider wants to mulch and grow. And Worm just doesn't know where he fits yet. They are almost like 'everyman' characters."

"Diary of a Worm, A Spider and a Fly" is an amalgamation of three books: "Diary of a Worm," "Diary of a Spider" and "Diary of a Fly."

"The show follows the three characters from the first day of school to the end of the school year," explains Gamez. "By the end of the show, Worm finds his place in his world and realizes that he is more important than he thinks."

Gamez enjoys the music in the production, from rap to more traditional children's music. He names "Legs," a song sung by Spider as one of his favorites.

"I really like that song. It's a fun little old-school ditty and I can't move much in my costume so a song about lots of legs is fun for me," he laughs.

As part of "Diary of a Worm, A Spider and a Fly," Gamez has become very close with all the actors and crew involved in the production.

"I love traveling. The biggest thing is the connections you make with the people around you. You become family. You are travelling with your best friends."
