Hawks in unfamiliar role
Jarred Kostic has been around the local volleyball scene for close to 15 years.
So, as the new head coach of Bethlehem Catholic, Kostic is certainly familiar with what he's dealing with in the LVC. Having Bethlehem Catholic enter the year under the radar is something that the program hasn't been familiar with in recent memory.
Kostic enters his first-year with a Hawks team that brings back little varsity experience, but hopes that Becahi can build throughout the season.
With nearly all of Becahi's starters gone from a year ago, Kostic enters a situation where he knows he'll have to develop the players currently in the program, but that doesn't curb his enthusiasm for finally becoming a head coach in the LVC.
"I'm really excited to have my own program," Kostic said. "It's something that I have waited for awhile now. I've had other opportunities in the past, but I just felt like I couldn't commit at those times. Now is just as good as any to jump in and get started.
"My plan is for the boys to continue to work hard every time they step in the gym."
And those players stepping back into the gym include, seniors Prestin Rusin (OH), Austin Chakif (setter), Chris Mathur (MH), Connor Abrams (OH), Jaimes Borges (defensive specialist) and Eric Madison (MH).
Juniors in the fold include Zach Blair (defensive specialist), James Miller (setter/OH), George Mayorga (OH), as well as sophomores Grady Hackett (OH) and Eric Lasalle (setter/OH).
"We have a strong core, however we have very little varsity experience," Kostic said. "Expectations for the year is for the boys to understand that they do come from a very strong program and that every team is different.
"We have to make sure we continue to work hard at practice and to do the little things that will have us compete just like past Becahi teams."
Kostic knows his team might be under the radar, but hopes that can play as a positive for his team as they juggle the tasks of battling in the LVC.
"We are not an experienced team as far as varsity goes," he said. "The boys are still getting use to the style of coaching I bring to the program. The biggest key for us will be to work hard as a team and to make sure we are able to have consistent ball control."
