Two advance to states
Whitehall's recent performance at the PIAA District 11 Class AAA swimming championships proved to be a continuous sign for the present, as well as the future.
Junior Mina Feyrer, and sophomore Alexus Merkert, both earned the right to represent the Zephyrs at the PIAA State meet next week after their performances at the district meet.
Feyrer, who finished sixth in the 100 fly at states last year, took top honors in the same event at the district meet with a time of 57.14. Feyrer, who was the top seed in the event, was just a half-second off the district record.
Merkert, who was seeded second, finished in the same spot with a time of 57.44.
Overall, the Zephyr girls finished sixth overall with 171 points, and the boys were 11th overall with 80 points.
"We figured both of them would be right at the top," said head coach Pete Rile. "They were seeded high and be right there all year long for us. They will be challenged at states, but they both can certainly hold their own in this event."
Senior Jon Boyd set a new school record in his section of the 200 yard freestyle relay (23.10) that helped teammates senior Takwan Hargrove and juniors Felix Figureoa and Anthony Fragnito also set a new school mark in the event (1.35.66). The boys also took seventh place in both the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.
Boyd and Hargrove are the lone seniors on the boys team that should be able to mature and grow.
"We'll certainly miss those two," added Rile about his two seniors. "We do have a good group of guys and all of us our girls will be back except Kailyn (Beil). Even though we are losing only a few, all of them have been big scorers for us.
"We'll look for a good performance at states, and then we will continue to build on what we have."
Senior Kailyn Beil also had a stellar performance in the diving competition as she finished fourth overall with 345.11 points. She improved from last year's 12th-place finish, but she just missed qualifying for the state meet as the top three finishers advanced.
"It was very exciting to finish where I did, but I was disappointed that I didn't get to states," said Beil, who will continue her diving at West Chester University next fall. "(Easton's Kelsey Jehl the top finisher) were going back and forth as well as the rest of the girls for the first two rounds.
"I was happy with my career, but I would have liked to make it to states my last year."
