Thomas L. Zelko, HS track coach, teacher

Thomas L. Zelko, 65, of Bethlehem, died March 09, 2014. He was the husband of Diane (Shramko) Zelko for 40 years.

He was a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame High School where he played sports. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Shippensburg University, where he had been president and vice-resident of the Zeta Tau chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He earned a master's degree in Education from Lehigh University. He received a Ford Foundation grant in projective geometry and statistics.

He taught mathematics at Liberty High School for 35 years, retiring in 2005. He was the boys and girls track team head coach from 1978-1990. The boy's team of 1998 was undefeated and East Penn League Champions. He was a statistician for WLVT Channel 39 for Lehigh University Football televised games.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Education Association, Pennsylvania Education Association, National Education Association, Eastern Pennsylvania Mathematics Instructors, Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association and The Heights Athletic Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kara Zelko-and her husband Dale Mease ; two grandsons, Dylan Preston Mease and Gage Thomas Mease; and many relatives.

Contributions may be made to Liberty High School Track and Field or to Lehigh Valley Hospice, 17th and Chew St., Allentown.

Arrangements were made by Connell Funeral Home Inc., Bethlehem.
