The Northampton Borough Council approved a request requiring specialized training for public works personnel.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko made the request at the March 4 council meeting. Council approved his request.
Lehigh Career & Technical Institute has agreed to train four public works employees.
The cost is $1,650. The start date for the training is yet to be determined.
"We recently lost two heavy equipment operators," Zarayko said. "Traditionally, we have four on staff. I would like to promote two of the light equipment operators to the position of heavy equipment operator. However, I would like to train the two potential heavy equipment operators and also the existing heavy equipment operators. None have had any formal training."
In other business, Zarayko provided a report to council on the status of snow removal.
"I have not been able to determine the cost of snow removal and plowing so far this year," he said. "However, I had budgeted $120,000 and I think we at least doubled that amount."
The borough continues to remove snow from street and dumping it off Smith Lane, behind the municipal building. The borough is working with a private hauler to assist in snow removal.
