Parkland uses depth in first-round win
With just under two minutes gone in the second quarter of the PIAA first-round game last Saturday night at Freedom high school, the Parkland boys basketball team was in a bind.
Three starters (Jimmy Hahn, Nick Selvaggi and Justin Zajko) all picked up two fouls and were forced to sit. But just when the Trojans could have put their heads down, the team showed its depth as other players raised their games to send Parkland to a 63-51 win over Central Bucks West out of District One.
Freshman Sam Iorio and sophomore Kyle Stout both had big second quarters. Iorio scored seven points in the quarter and Stout added five. Each player also hit from behind the arc, and the Trojans (22-5) never lost a beat, leading 28-23 at halftime after a bit of a sluggish first half.
"Usually at this time of year different guys step up at different times," said Parkland head coach Andy Stephens said. "Whether it's the first half or second half, this game or another game, you need to have different guys step up. We know that from our experience in the tournament and we had a number of guys do it tonight."
"That's the great part about our team, we're so deep," Nick Rindock said. "If guys get in foul trouble, we don't have to worry. We have guys off the bench that we can trust and know can play."
Rindock did his part as a senior starter. He tallied a game-high 19 points and added six rebounds and four assists.
Along with Rindock, Selvaggi had a career night too. Coming into the game, the senior averaged just under four points per game. But on Saturday night, with Zajko and Hahn struggling from the field, Selvaggi took it on his own to step up his game.
He went 4-for-4 from the field and made both of his free throws in scoring 10 points. He also grabbed five rebounds.
"[Selvaggi] played awesome," Rindock. "He played great and when he plays great, we're 10 times better than when he's not playing well. He hit his jumpers, boarded well and kept his cool."
Selvaggi was also commended for his defensive work inside on CB West big man Evan Dunn. Dunn, a 6-foot-5 center, has an inch on Selvaggi, but that didn't seem to help him out that much. He made two of his first three shots, but didn't score again after Selvaggi was put on him and finished with just four points.
CB West never got closer than six in the second half.
The District 11 champion Trojans advance to the second round of states for the second straight year. They played Rustin of West Chester, the fourth place team out of District One, on Wednesday night at Reading High School.
That game was played after Press deadline.
