Donald R. Mackenzie, Scottish Games competitior

Donald R. Mackenzie, 73, died Feb. 26, 2014, at home in Kutztown after a long battle with cancer. Born in Somerville, N.J., he was a son of the late Carrie "Billie" (Reeve) Mackenzie and Neil Mackenzie. He was the husband of Mary Jane Mackenzie for 22 years.

He was a graduate of Bound Brook HS. He attended the University of Rochester and Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Institute of Technology).

He was an electronics technician in the U.S. Navy for six years on a destroyer escort, the U.S.S. McCaffery, and then the U.S.S. Essex.

He worked for 26 years with Bell Labs as a research engineer in fiber optics. He held many patents. After retirement for Bell, he owned and operated the Chestnut Shop where he sold his handmade woodwork and leather products.

He supported the Wounded Warriors, Help Hospital Veterans, Blinded Veterans Association, Disabled Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a certified instructor and a patron member of the NRA. He belonged to the Topton and Ontelonee Fishing and Game Clubs. He competed in and set records at more than 100 Scottish Games and powerlifting meets. He was a member of the United States Power Squadron, emphasizing and teaching boating safety.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Allan and companion Richard Kucera of Green Valley, Ariz. and Neil of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Mary of Flemington, N.J., a stepson, James W. Kelley of Bethlehem; protégés Scott Peterson and his daughter Hannah Peterson of Gainesville, Fla.; three sisters, Ellen Merk and Ben Paskus of Pittsburgh, Ann and Jack Malokas of California and Judy and her husband Joe Frank of Belmar, N.J.; nieces; nephews, and cousins.
