Bradley, Sziy compete at states

Aside from all the fanfare and prestige, Zack Bradley was just happy to be there.

The Roughies' senior and fellow senior teammate Rhaine Sziy were the lone representatives at the PIAA Class 2A State Championships in Hershey last weekend. It was the first visit for each member of the duo that both lost opening-round matches.

Bradley, who had a 38-5 record at 160 pounds to enter the tournament, lost a 4-1 decision to Jimmy Miller of Brookville and then he lost a 3-0 decision to Ryan Zalar of Jefferson-Morgan in the first round of wrestlebacks.

Sziy, who had a 35-9 mark at 195 pounds, lost an 8-3 decision to Garrett Wesneski of Canton in the opening round and then lost a 3-2 decision to Garrett Reinwald of Fort Lebouf.

"He (Miller) caught me early and I couldn't get back," said Bradley of his opening match. "But I soon realized I was going up against the best. Those guys beat me and stuff happens. For me, wrestling isn't my main sport and it is for everyone here.

"But I thought I did the best I could out there. (Sziy) and I just didn't come through when we needed to. Overall, it was a great experience and one that I will never forget. Just to be able to get there is a huge accomplishment for both of us."

When he looked back at his career, Bradley stated that he reached all of his goals. He, Sziy and fellow senior Jake Rusnock all reached the milestone of 100 career wins this season. Bradley finished with 111 career victories, a second-place finish in districts, and a third-place finish at regionals.

"It was a good career for me," said Bradley, who will attend Shippensburg University next fall to play football. "This was the year that I was hoping to have. I thought I could do well at districts and I was really happy with the second -place finish. If anyone told me that I would finish third at regionals, I might not have believed them. Wrestling was always a part-time sport to stay in shape during the winter to me.

"As it turned out, I was a better wrestler than I thought I was."

As a team, Catty finished with an overall 12-5 meet record and had a 7-1 mark in the Colonial League. The Roughies lost to eventual champion Saucon Valley in the opening round of the league duals and then they beat Palisades before they lost to North Schuylkill in the district duals.

"We had some ups and downs during the season, but it basically went the way we thought it would," said Bradley. "We lost to Saucon (Valley) and they had a solid team. But we had three wrestlers go to regionals and they had two.

"But it was a season that I soon won't forget."
