Join Community Bike Works for the upcoming event, "Gearing Up for the Future" scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. March 13 at Coca Cola Park, Allentown. The celebration will take place in the club level of the park.
Community Bike Works is hosting the gala to honor retiring founder Stefan Goslowski. Air Products has stepped up to sponsor this community event. Current students will be presenting informational talks about the organization. A silent and live auction will take place. Hors d'oeuvres and a beverage will be served.
Community Bike Works uses peer role modeling, adult mentors and bicycles to reach out to inner-city boys and girls ages nine to 17. The program goal is to keep at-risk youth off of the streets and away from drugs and crime. By participating in the program, the kids learn about bicycle mechanics, business skills, commitments and responsibilities.
The organization has several programs. One is a reading program where students receive reading help two to three times a week from college students. Those who need help are paired with a college student to improve their reading skills. Each reader takes a reading assessment test at the start and at the end of each three month program.
In the "Earn a Bike" program, children are rewarded for their efforts and can register to earn a recycled bike and a new helmet.
Money raised from the gala will benefit programs. The graduates from these programs continue on with the organization, serving as mentors, role models and instructors. There is a ticket cost for the gala.
Community Bike Works is accepting used bicycles and has an ongoing need for boys 20-inch models.
