Trojans win LVSHL a fifth time

The Parkland ice hockey team does not know the meaning of the word letdown. For a team that has won 44 straight Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League games, a majority by multiple goals, the Trojans treat each and every game like it could be their last, never playing down to their opponent.

That is a big reason for the streak of consecutive LVSHL titles. Parkland (20-1-1) added its fifth in a row Monday night at the Lehigh Valley Ice Arena, winning 3-0 over Phillipsburg in game two of a best-of-three series. The Trojans took game one 4-1 last week.

"It's more relieving than anything," said senior defenseman Ryan Dumbach. "Every year we kind of have this on our back. We know everyone is coming for us. It feels great to know we're on top again."

Dumbach was part of a defensive foursome that only gave up one goal in the two-game series against the second-best team in the league. Along with Dumbach, his linemate Eric Johannes, and the other line of Morgan Bensinger and Dan Hertia, the Trojans gave the Stateliners a hard time at scoring.

But a lot of credit still goes to the play of goalkeeper Jordan Lorah who made 13 saves in the shutout. He also stopped 18 shots in game one.

"The defense was really keeping the puck to the outside and kept the shots visible for me, I was able to see everything," Lorah said. "They did a good job clearing out the rebounds that I had."

Parkland scored within the first six minutes to take off any early pressure. Connor Breinich wristed home a shot on a pass from Mike Monkiewicz to take a 1-0 lead. The goal came after the first seven shots were saved by Zach Saylor.

In the second period, Dumbach and Bensinger added goals on assists from Breinich and Brett McHale.

It was a physical game with a lot of big hits from both sides as neither team wanted to give in.

"Phillipsburg is a tough team," said Lorah. "They came out hard and didn't want it to end tonight. They wanted a game three. Our defense, and even our offense did some good back checking. There were some big hits and it got some momentum going."

Parkland began its quest at a Flyers Cup championship on Wednesday against Spring-Ford at Bucks County Ice. That game was played after Press deadline. A win would put No. 6 seed Parkland in a quarterfinal-round game Monday against either No. 2 North Penn or No. 14 Downingtown East.
