Catasauqua senior Rhaine Sziy was honored, along with the other Lehigh Valley school's nominees, at the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Lehigh Valley Chapter Football Scholar Athlete Banquet at the Northampton Community Center Sunday evening.
This year's scholar athlete scholarship winner was Jacob Del Priore of Southern Lehigh High School (see story). Del Priore's honor marked the fourth straight year and fifth time in six years that a student-athlete from the Colonial League was honored as the scholar athlete winner.
Rhaine is ranked 16th out of 120 with a grade point average of 93.68 at Catty. This past season Rhaine helped the Rough Riders to a 13-2 record, a second consecutive Colonial League championship, a District XI championship, a third consecutive victory over Northampton on Thanksgiving and the school's first-ever victory in the PIAA State playoffs.
Rhaine was named to the Colonial League first team as a center for the second straight season. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Varsity "C" Club, Student Council Activities Coordinator, German Club Treasurer, Debate and the Drama Club.
Rhaine also participates in wrestling and track and field, and has been a church alter server for 16 years, as well as volunteering in other capacities at his church. Rhaine plans on attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute to major in biomedical engineering and to continue his wrestling career.
