This year's harsh, unrelenting winter season has taken a toll not only on Northampton Borough streets, but on the 2014 borough budget.
The costs associated with combating winter storms has led Northampton borough Manager Gene Zarayko to reconsider the street resurfacing and improvement projects in this year's budget.
The borough administration indicated it will review and crunch the numbers to determine how the winter has affected the budget to date.
"We did, however, order 78,000 tons of repaving materials," Zarayko said at the Feb. 20 borough council meeting.
According to Zarayko, the administration and the public works department are hard pressed in keeping up with ensuring the borough streets and alleys are in passable condition for borough residents and motorists.
"It's unbelievable. It's a real mess," he said.
Making matters worse, a sinkhole has developed at the intersection of Smith Lane and Laubach Avenue, across from the municipal building. There is no estimate of what the costs will be to fill and stabilize the hole.
"We have put a dump truck we want to purchase this year on hold," Zarayko said.
Also, roadwork on Laubach Avenue, to be funded by a borough loan approved earlier, will not begin until 2015.
Zarayko said this year the handicapped ramps on Laubach Avenue will be constructed by way of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.
"We have three years to get the street done," Zarayko said.
