LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

Northwestern Lehigh High School Science Olympiad Team is made up of about 50 students who compete in 23 science and engineering related events.

Students study college level material to prepare for these compeititions.

This team is unique in its ability to help them develop the skill to study advanced topics and demonstrate mastery.

It also fosters working with others in a cooperative way since the study is usually done in small groups.

Our team members will be much better prepared for college and a career by participating on this team.

Many of our former students say this experience has helped them in college and given them a sense of direction for their careers.

More information about Science Olympiad is available at soinc.org.

We hosted the seven Tiger Invitational Science Olympiad on Feb. 8. We had 36 teams registered to participate at our competition.

Northwestern Lehigh will make up three of these teams so more of our members can compete.

We had about 550 to 600 students and coaches at this event.

Many of these students and coaches are from the Lehigh Valley, but we draw teams some from eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

Our competition is well respected and was filled in early November.

Due to space limitations we were forced to turn away at least a dozen schools.

Our "A" team took fourth place and earned our best score this season.

We have a strong team this year and are expecting to do well at the Central-Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Science Olympiad Competition on March 20 at Kutztown University.

We are also anticpating earning a spot to compete at the Pennsylvania State Science Olympiad Competition on May 2 at Juniata College (another overnight trip).

Each year our team gives scholarships to seniors who pursue science or engineering majors. We estimate about 10 seniors will qualify for a scholarship this year.

We have given $1,200 in 2012 and $1,500 in 2013 to qualified senior members.

Fortunately, we were able to give $300 to each student and have not had to turn anyone away who was qualified.

Our school currently provides transportation to our competitions, but we must pay for all other expenses.

We will be selling food at the Tiger Invitational and hope to raise $3,000 toward the expenses.

We are asking for monetary donations toward expenses.
