Lehigh decides about BMX track

Administrator Alice Rehrig told Lehigh Township supervisors at the Feb. 25 meeting questions surrounding the BMX trail at Indian Trail Park have been answered by H.A. Thompson Insurance.

Rehrig was informed while the liability premium will not increase, liability exposure will.

Supervisor Darryl Snover said the BMX track is an existing entity.

Solicitor David Backenstoe said if the township does not want to underwrite the liability a letter should be drafted stipulating the township will lease the land if a 501(c)3 or other formal organization is formed. The practice is common for other sports organizations.

Supervisor Sandy Hopkins objected, saying the group is trespassing.

Rehrig attended the meeting with the Department of Environmental Protection at Northampton Community College concerning the MS4 stormwater permit which must be renewed. DEP wanted to view township files during an inspection. She said the Environmental Protection Agency has been pressuring the DEP.

The police association will merge with the fire department on June 21 for a 5K race fundraiser. The race will be held at Delps Park and permission was requested to close some roads.

Also during the meeting, Sean Billings turned in his resignation on the traffic impact committee. No applications have been received for the opening on the recreation board.

Backenstoe also reported the Cherryville zoning map is being updated to accommodate a change from residential to commercial. Rehrig received a call from a property owner who wanted an addition behind the mapped property included. It was decided to maintain the map as it is. If the property owner wants to use the addition commercially he can apply for a variance. Barbara Green of Blue Mountain Ski Area said former Police Chief Jeff Schuyler helped control traffic coming off the mountain on holiday weekends when the traffic tends to be a solid line from the mountain.

She asked if the traffic light in Danielsville could be adjusted to allow traffic to flow more freely on those days. If the light is adjusted, the Traffic Light Maintenance Company must be called to change the light both at 3 p.m. when traffic comes from the mountain and 6 p.m. when traffic has run through Danielsville.

Green said Blue Mountain had been distributing notes requesting vehicles turn right toward Palmerton in Danielsville rather than travel straight to Cherryville before making the turn. She believes there are five days in the year when the problem occurs. Green said she would be willing to pay the extra police hours if that is the method chosen to solve the problem.

Fire Chief Rick Hildebrand said fire police would be able to assist in the matter.
