J4, Old Home Week Reunion get nod
Confusion about early planning for the Old Home Week Reunion was laid to rest as Ben Ferenchak of the OHW Reunion Committee made a second appearance before the North Catasauqua Borough Council last week to discuss who, exactly, is in charge of what at the North Catasauqua Park July 5.
The reunion is set to take place that day. It is the same day that the J4 Celebration will be happening at the North Catasauqua Park. Ferenchak's idea was that people attending the reunion could also spend some time at the park enjoying some of the J4 activities. However, his plans left council with a lot of questions at their Feb. 27 meeting.
"Where is J4 doing their stuff? Where do the [reunion] tents go?" asked Council President Joseph Keglovits, and added, "Is there going to be a J4 Car Show?"
The J4 committee typically hosts an Oldtimers' Softball Game and attracts food vendors and craft tables to its event. This year, according to a report by Catasauqua Mayor Barbara Schlegel at the Feb. 12 North Catasauqua Council meeting, the J4 Committee was considering having a car show at the park as well.
"It's hard for us to say what we should do, if everybody wants to do everything," Keglovits said. "J4 and Old Home Week should come up with a final plan so we can give approval."
Ferenchak said he thought after he had attended an earlier council meeting that he had approval for setting up reunion tents, but only needed to decide if he wanted the reunion event to include serving beer.
"We're no longer asking permission for the beer," he said.
After some discussion about the difficult logistics of setting up tents and having a car show and softball game all on the same day, Councilman William Nothstein commented on the J4 tradition.
"I think we should have a ballgame and reunion and no car show," he said. "The focus should be more on the community and not on having in outside people come in to a car show."
Councilwoman Cherie Gebhardt said she agreed with Nothstein.
The council voted 5-0, with John Yanek and Michael Seng absent, in favor of approving the Old Home Week Reunion and J4 activities without a car show.
