HELLERTOWN: Local Scout breaks popcorn sales total

Saucon Valley Elementary School student Joey Di Russo (above) knows how to set a goal and achieve it. Joey, a Webelos Cub Scout with Pack 319, recently decided he wanted to exceed his usual sale of Trails End Popcorn.

Proceeds from sales are used to fund Pack 319 and the Minsi Trail Council, which overseas all Scouts in the Lehigh Valley.

According to Joey's mother Lisa, he learned goal setting through the annual sale of popcorn. Prizes are awarded for reaching a certain fundraising threshold. The top prize in 2013 was a tablet. Lisa said Joey broke his initial goal by selling $2,800 worth of popcorn. He then set another goal for himself$3,000which he reached.

Not satisfied, Joey exceeded last year's total troop sales of $4,300 by selling $5,000. Still unsatisfied, Joe went one step further by selling $5,100 worth of popcorn.

"Everyday after he finished his homework he would say, 'let's go sell popcorn,'" Lisa said. Joey's grandparent's bought him the tablet for working so hard. Because of his fundraising efforts, Joey received over $400 in Walmart gift cards, a model rocket, tickets to an Iron Pigs baseball game and a $300 college scholarship fund.

When not focused on a particular goal, Lisa said, he makes time to unwind and enjoy himself. "Joey likes being a Scout because he does fun things with his friends and his dad," Lisa said.
