Police arrested a man shortly after a reported car theft from a paring lot at Mechanic and Webster streets the morning of Feb. 23.

John Smarth, 43, of Hobart Street, allegedly stole the car and was observed by police driving it not much later. After a brief pursuit, Smarth exited the car and fled on foot.

Smarth was found and arrested, and is charged with theft of moveable property, recieving stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possessing instruments of crime, driving without a license and accidents involving vehicles.

Smarth was remanded to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
