Alverta M. Serfass, YWCA Women of the Year

Alverta M. Serfass, 84, of Bethlehem, died Feb. 24, 2014, in St. Luke's Hospice House. Born in Lehighton, she was a daughter of the late John and Mabel (Helmer) Decker. She was the wife of the late William H. Serfass.

She was a member at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bethlehem.

She was a member of the the Crimson Hatted Cruisers Chapter of the Red Hat Society. She volunteered an average of 50 to 60 hours a month at the Bethlehem Area Public Library. She was a volunteer for the Lehigh Valley Brail Guild and New Bethany Ministries. She was honored recently as one of the YWCA "Women of the Year".

She is survived by two sons, John J. and his wife Janice of Hawley and James W. of Versailles, France; three grandchildren, Jonah Serfass, Jessica and her husband Jason Glenn and Jaclyn and her husband Shawn Heinert and their sons, Tyler and Cash.

She was predeceased by a brother, Glenn Decker; and a companion, Peter Angstadt.

The Bethlehem Public Library's March 5 and 8 book sales, 11 W. Church St., is being held in her honor.
