WESTERN SALISBURY COLUMN March 14 is Pi day
All Salisbury Township schools will be closed March 14 for a professional development day.
March 14 is also known as Pi day for the correlation between the date 3-14 and the value of Pi as 3.14.
In March 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives resolved to: support the designation of Pi Day and its celebration; recognize the continuing importance of the National Science Foundation's math and science education programs encouraging schools and educators to observe the day with appropriate activities that teach students about Pi and engage them about the study of mathematics.
A now retired ninth grade math teacher, Mrs. Heim, used to celebrate Pi day by having any student who wanted to, bring in a pie to share with the class. I believe I made a pumpkin pie for Justus to take in since it is his favorite pie. I encourage more math teachers to keep the tradition going.
March 14 is also Albert Einstein's birthday and my son's birthday. The funny thing is Jacob has the strange ability to check the time whenever it is 3:14. It doesn't matter if he is watching TV, playing Xbox or just hanging out, he always sees when it is 3:14 and lets us know what time it is.
There is a curriculum and technology committee meeting 7 p.m. March 10 at Salisbury High School and a school board meeting 7:30 March 19 at the administration building.
A Salisbury family, owners of the 1760 Pub-N-Grille in Trexlertown, is helping the Salisbury Middle School Interact Club and Student Council hold a fundraiser.
SMS is selling gift cards to the Pub-N-Grille, with all proceeds going directly to the school. Contact mtobias@stsd.org to order the cards.
The deadline for submitting baby photos for seniors to the yearbook has been extended to March 13. There is a form on the SHS website to fill out and return to Mr. Vecellio in Room 002. Any questions can be sent to mvecellio@stsd.org. I am contemplating how badly I want to embarrass my son by what picture I choose to submit.
This is your last reminder to get tickets and attend Salisbury High School's spring production of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." There are four show times: 7 p.m. March 7, 2 and 7 p.m. March 8 and 2 p.m. March 9. To purchase tickets in advance, send an email to salisburytheatre@salisbury.org or call 610-797-4107, ext. 2508. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. Please come out and support the talented students of SHS. They really do a great job!
