Pates fall short of trip to Hershey
The look on Brandon Hall's face said it all.
Freedom's demise at the Northeast Regional 3A wrestling tournament Saturday night came in a rude manner, as Dylan Brown saw his season end following a 7-3 defeat to Liberty's Luke Werner in the 106-pound third place consolation finals.
Brown was Freedom's only wrestler in the medal rounds, where he saw a 3-2 lead in the third period turn into a disaster for him.
For his head coach, the disappointment resonated.
"It's tough for me because I see how much work he puts into it," said Hall. "He's one of the hardest working kids in our room. It hurts. It's incredibly disappointing. My heart goes out to him because I know how much he wanted it. A fourth place finish at regionals is the worst."
Brown saw things slip away late in the third period, when he got into a scramble with Werner and ended up getting reversed to fall behind 4-3, along with the addition of three back points to give the Liberty freshman a berth in Hershey.
"Luke Werner's a good scrambler and he's tough on the mat," said Hall. "Last time they wrestled it went into overtime and they had a scramble and Dylan was able to come out on top. I don't really think there was one thing to point at. It just didn't work out."
Freedom saw all three of their wrestlers fall by the wayside over the weekend, as Jonah Zych (120) and John Callahan (182) both were eliminated on Saturday. Callahan was one bout short of competing in the consolation final, but he lost to James Palmisano of Stroudsburg 3-2 to end his season.
For Hall and company, having the season end before Hershey was a difficult pill to swallow.
"It's a very sour taste in my mouth right now," he said. "I won't forget how I feel, but I want guys like Dylan to remember this too. I want what happened here to springboard him to become a better wrestler. We'll all use this as motivation going forward. You need to carry these feelings and emotions with you throughout the off-season, so you remember this."
