Magnan breaks records, wins gold

Freedom High School junior Sam Magnan broke two district records, capturing the gold medal in the 200 free and the 500 free at the District 11 Swimming Championships on Feb. 28 and March 1 at Parkland High School.

Magnan took first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.07.

"I wasn't expecting that at all. When I broke it, I was shocked. I beat my best time by two seconds. I was surprised. I was real happy," Magnan said.

Magnan also took first place in the 500 free with a time of 4:30.01.

"My only goal was to break the record. 4:34 was my fastest time this season, but my best time was faster than that. I'm not even tapered. I just did it through training, and I knew I had it in me," he said.

Magnan's district record in the 500 free also broke Parkland High School's pool record.

Magnan was also the anchor for Freedom's 200 medley relay team, which placed second to Emmaus, missing first place by a little over one second.

Patriot teammates, Peter Conzola, Trevor Watlington, and Connor Harrigan were also on the relay team.

Conzola, Shjon Watlington, Harrigan, and Magnan also placed second in the 400 free relay.

"I knew I'd have to swim really, really fast to win, but it wasn't enough. I gave it my all. We were really close with Liberty going into the last leg, and they came in third," Magnan said.

Magnan will move on to the PIAA State Swimming Championships, scheduled for March 12-15 at Bucknell University.

Harrigan was second in the 500 free and was third in the 200 IM and Watlington was fourth.
