Gallery View: Her images embrace emotions
Jett Ulaner Sarachek displays her latest work in "Explorations," through March 16, Banana Factory, 25 W. Third St., Bethlehem.
Sarachek utilizes digital photography, as well as the IPhone, to capture sensual images of the human figure intermixed with the natural world. Exceptionally romantic shots of the human body mix with images of nature to create gorgeous montages, some larger than life, some small as a snapshot.
Sarachek doesn't hesitate to embrace the value of the everyday mobile phone camera as an artistic tool.
"When the IPhone came along, I started using the Hipstamatic app," Sarachek explains. "I found I didn't have to spend hours in the darkroom anymore. After 25 years, I was happy to get out of the darkroom."
In "Explorations," Sarachek searches for images that explore nature and sensuality as she seeks to shed light on the hidden world of our deepest physical desires. The concept of sexuality and aging interests her.
"The way you act about sexuality changes as you grow older, as you grow into a long term relationship of many years," she relates. "Sexuality can be put away, and I don't like to see that happen to people as they get older. I like to see it keep going, to expose it."
Sarachek, a Lower Macungie Township resident, also is an art therapist. She teaches classes at the Banana Factory.
"I'm doing some photography workshops for people living with cancer. The classes are about exploring their feelings and allow those suffering with cancer to lose themselves in art."
Losing one's self in art is a process well-known to Sarachek.
"When making work I am exploring the creative process," she says. "Thoughts and emotions gather in my unconscious. I try to create images that embrace those unconscious wishes that often go beyond words."
