Borough applies for county grant
The Borough of Northampton municipal swimming pool this summer might receive a minor makeover – a pavilion.
Borough council at the Feb. 20 meeting was apprised of the possible capital improvement project scheduled for this summer. During the meeting, council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing borough projects Planner Victor Rodite to submit a grant application in the amount of $67,336. If approved, the money would come from Northampton County's Open Space Initiative.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said the pavilion, if approved, could be utilized by families for special events such as anniversaries and children birthday parties. Zarayko added there is ample room available for the pavilion.
The pool is located off Laubach Avenue.
"It is required by the county that we must match this amount [$67,236] with in-kind service or other funding, " Zarayko said.
In 2013 the borough bought and installed with the Public Works Department three large pieces of playground equipment from county grant proceeds. The playground equipment was installed at 26th street, Canal Street and the municipal park. No borough funds were used for the equipment.
In other business, approval was granted to the Northampton Area Band Parents for use of the municipal park pavilion May 10. The organization said the pavilion will be used for a flea market to raise funds for the Big N Band.
During the meeting, council granted a request from a resident at 461 E. 11th St. for a handicapped parking space. Police Chief Ron Morey reviewed the request and recommended approval. The borough has a policy of permitting two maximum handicap parking spaces per block.
Councilman Robert Coleman also reported the borough will host a meeting of the Middle Eastern Counties Association of Boroughs (MECAB) this week in council chambers. Mayor Thomas Reenock is making arrangements for a speaker to present an address on crime and safety topics.
