LHS girls eliminated; BC plays on
Liberty's girls basketball season ended with a 47-35 district playoff loss to Bangor last week at Liberty High School. Meanwhile, Becahi got by Saucon Valley in their opening round game from Saturday.
Hurricane coach, Becky Soto, said, "Of course it's disappointing. You want to keep going, but the opportunity slipped through our hands. A lot of sophomores were coming into a high pressure game, and the seniors are counting on them. I was proud of them."
The Hurricanes stuck with the Slaters through three quarters, even going to the locker room with a 23-18 lead.
In the fourth quarter, however, Bangor went on a 16 point run, ultimately scoring 21 points to Liberty's eight.
"This was closure for us. I feel like we improved on picking up the pieces. People doubted us, but I could see what they were," said Soto.
The first-year Hurricane coach could even see what they were after losing senior all-star, Kali Shumock, to an injury that sidelined her for the season.
"People doubted them, and everybody brought their A game against us. That's pressure," Soto said. "In the last five games, it clicked. They believed, and they were unstoppable."
The Hurricanes had 15 plays all season, and Soto called every one of them until she decided to relinquish that role to sophomore guard, Kay West.
"The key was point guard, Kay West. I wanted to give her that freedom. She really matured this year," said Soto.
Soto also noted sophomore, Maddie Capuano's, impact on the team. Known for her three-point shooting, Capuano developed her game, even when she was double and triple teamed.
"I asked a lot of them this year. Trust. Expectation. There was pressure on them to excel at districts. They needed to have something to believe in," Soto said.
Regarding Soto's first year as head coach of the Hurricanes, she said, "I had so much fun. We bonded quickly. I guarantee we were like a family.
The Hawks won 51-34 and face Southern Lehigh Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Northern Lehigh.
Kalista Walters led the way with 16 points going 8-for-14 from the field.
Both Daniell Griffin and Maggie Melhem added 11 points, including a 3-for-6 performance for Melhem from beyond the three-point line.
