The young Mr. Bach: The world premiere of "Young Meister Bach," a one-act comic opera by Chuck Holdeman, above, with libretto by Bill Bly and stage direction by Christopher Shorr, will be presented at 3 p.m. March 1, Baker Hall, Zoellner Arts Center, Lehigh University. The Bach Choir of Bethlehem, under the direction of Greg Funfgeld, performs the work at Zoellner, as well as at 3 p.m. March 2, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the German Society of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and May 3 and 10 at the 107th Bethlehem Bach Festival. For the Family Concert performance March 1, Funfgeld will give an introduction to the elements of opera for young people, "Before there was 'Phantom of the Opera,' there was opera." The imaginatively staged and costumed opera is a musical telling of episodes from the life of the young Johann Sebastian Bach as he embarks on his career at age 18.
