Recreation center to receive help with equipment upgrades

The Northampton Borough Recreation Center's fitness room certainly gets a good workout by the public.

Two community organizations reported at the Feb. 6 council meeting they are willing to do their part in helping the Lerchenmiller Drive center upgrade its aging equipment with new state-of-the art equipment.

The Northampton Memorial Community Center is considering ways to provide funding to the recreation center, so it can move ahead with plans for new fitness equipment that serves the needs of both men and women. Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said the community center's board of directors will meet Feb. 17 at the recreation center to take a look at some of the equipment in the fitness room.

Recreation Center Director Jason Kremus said the equipment needs to be replaced.

"The board is considering purchasing this replacement equipment by using the profits from the small games of chance that are sold at our [community center] bingo games," Zarayko said.

In addition, the community center's board, at its Jan. 28 meeting, were presented a report of the New Year's Eve Dance at the Laubach Avenue ballroom, which was sponsored by the recreation center.

Zarayko said the recreation center will receive a $1,530 check, their portion of the New Year's Eve profit.

Still on tap by the recreation center is a Feb. 26 bus trip to the Mohegan Sun Casino. Because of a few cancellations, Kremus said there are five seats available. The price is $27. The event serves as a fundraiser for the recreation center.

Also doing its part in helping fund projects at the recreation center, Northampton Athletic Association is holding a basket bingo, with proceeds going to the recreation center. The association holds youth basketball games, practices and tournaments at the recreation center.
