Girls wait another day
It took all of Northampton's 22 games to get a berth in the District 11 Girls Class 4A basketball tournament, which was to start Tuesday.
But, the Kids still had to wait an extra day to play their pigtail round game with East Stroudsburg South. Coach Jeff Jacksits' team was to play the Cavaliers Tuesday but the game was postponed by snow and rescheduled for Wednesday - which is after Press deadlines.
Northampton went into the home game with an 11-11 record, while ESS was 12-11 and one of those losses for the Cavaliers - the 10th seed - came from the Konkrete Kids (63-54) back in December.
The winner of the Kids-Cavaliers game is scheduled to play No. 2 seed Nazareth Friday at Catasauqua. The Kids, seeded 7th, are trying to advance in the tourney where the top 3 District 11 teams move on to play in the PIAA Championships.
Northampton, playing in the districts for the eighth-straight year, is trying to match the K-Kids' teams of 2010 and 2011 when they won back-to-back District 11 titles.
Northampton is paced by senior Leandra Sterner, a two-time Lehigh Valley Conference first team all-star who scored 355 points this season. Other seniors on this year's team are Kayla Csencsits, Erica Filipovtits, Amber Farnholtz, Autumn Klucsarits, and Zeniyah Sanders, who probably wouldn't start because of an ankle injury.
"We played them (ESS) early and had no trouble. But they're a little different now. They're small and fast, but I hope our talent and height will be enough," said Jacksits Tuesday.
Rounding out the Kids' squad are juniors Ali Reppert and Giovanna Martinez, sophomores Lauren Sterner, Sophia Eckroth and Francesca Sanchez and freshmen Aja Blount and Taylor Deutsch.
Other pigtail round games that were slated Tuesday were No. 11 Bangor (13-10) at No. 6 Liberty (11-11) and No. 9 Pottsville (15-8) at No. 8 Emmaus (11-11).
The Bangor knocked off the Hurricanes and will meet No. 3 seed Parkland (15-8) in the first game at Catasauqua before the Northampton-Eastburg South winner versus Nazareth (18-5).
Emmaus won and will face No. 1 Pocono Mountain West (17-7) at Northampton on Friday with No. 5 Pocono Mountain East (14-8) meeting No. 4 Pleasant Valley (13-8) also at Northampton.
