PHS ice hockey beats Emmaus

It didn't take long for Parkland to bounce back from its first loss of the season. The Trojans lost a nonleague game last week to North Penn, the team that ended their championship hopes a year ago.

Monday night, in a packed Steel Ice Center, the Trojans found the back of the net five times, and kept Emmaus (8-4-1) scoreless for a 5-0 win that keeps Parkland unbeaten at 12-0 in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League.

On Emmaus' senior night, the Green Hornets came out with a lot of energy, withstanding shot after shot from Parkland (12-0), but they just couldn't muster up enough good looks to get one by Trojans goalie Jordan Lorah (15 saves).

It took a little while for Parkland to get on the scoreboard.

Evan Dratch juked through three defenders and finished nicely into the back of the net on the team's eighth shot with 5:40 left in the first period. Ryan Dumbach scored within two minutes of Dratch's in the first period to give the Trojans some momentum, and they never looked back. Each player snuck in shots underneath the legs of Green Hornet goalie Michael Smoker.

Emmaus had one of its best chances of the game to cut the lead in half, but failed on the attempt. Chad Lawrence found himself on a breakaway with the clock winding down under five seconds, but Lorah came up with a big save to stave off any Emmaus momentum.

In a typically physical rivalry game between the two schools, there were a combined 10 players who spent time in the penalty box.

In the second period, Dan Hertia wristed a shot from just inside the blue line that once again snuck under the leg of Smoker, who had a somewhat difficult time seeing with traffic in front of him.

Dratch added his second goal midway through when he juked around a couple of Green Hornet defenders and scored stick side.

Once again in the third period, Parkland had their number of chances on goal. The Trojans outshot Emmaus 44-15, but Smoker did a good enough job keeping his team in the game. The junior finished with 39 saves.

Logan McHale had arguably the best opportunity for the Green Hornets early in the third period on a power play, but couldn't get it passed Lorah.

The Trojans added a fifth goal when Brett McHale circled behind Smoker and beat him to the lower corner.
