LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Parkland girls seeking first LVC title in nine years

The Lady Trojans haven't won the Lehigh Valley Conference title since the 2005-2006 season, but they're hoping to change that this season after winning the LVC's North Division. Beyond that, the focus will shift to the District 11 Tournament and a potential berth in the PIAA Tournament.

The young Parkland team hasn't seemed to be intimidated by tough competition this season, but the Trojans did come up on the short end against top teams like Bethlehem Catholic and Nazareth. One of the highlights of the season, though, was a win over Central Catholic, perennially one of the toughest teams in the LVC.

Now that his team will be facing tough competition every night of the postseason, Parkland head coach Wes Spence believes his team is well prepared for what's yet to come.

"I think they actually have an added motivation against these teams, because they've always welcomed tough competition," said Spence. "I don't think they feel any intimidation or added pressure even though they're playing very tough teams."

Once Parkland maneuvers through the LVC Tournament, the next task will be districts, which adds an added level of difficulty.

"While the teams in the LVC are tough, we know that every team we come up against now is going to be good," said Spence. "With teams in districts, a lot of times you don't know as much about them because you don't get to see them during the regular season.

"We haven't had a lot of time to game plan for specific teams this season anyway, because of the weather, so I think it's just a matter of playing hard and doing what we do."

The Trojans don't know yet who they'll be playing in districts, because the brackets won't be determined until this weekend. Parkland will likely come in with a good seeding based on their season record and could move higher based on what happens in the LVC playoffs. The Trojans are the second-ranked team in Class AAAA. They could move up as high as No. 1 with a league title, or could drop down to No. 3 if Class AAAA teams win Mountain Valley Conference and LVC titles.

While Parkland will likely be one of the more favored teams in districts, the path to a championship won't be an easy one.

"Sometimes, those teams in the lower seeds can be dangerous," said Spence. "Again, you don't always know a lot about them and there's a finality in districts, because one loss and your season is over. Plus, with some of those teams that we have played, we've gotten the bigger end of those teams, so they'll be looking to knock us off."

Parkland proved during the season that they are worthy of being considered among the better teams in the area and they've played tough against some of the other tough teams in the area.

"We've looked young sometimes this season," Spence said. "Especially against some of the better teams, but overall, we're prepared for what's ahead and we'll look to get hot at the right time and see what happens."
