Ortman hits milestone
Josh Ortman already knew he could wrestle with anyone in the state, but a win in late December gave him all the confidence in the world that he really could take on and beat anyone.
At the Powerade Tournament at Canon MacMillan High School, Ortman defeated a wrestler from Father Judge out of District 12 to record his 100th win and reach a distinguished milestone. But there is still more the senior hopes to accomplish this year.
"It's great but at the same time it's not a main goal of mine," Ortman said. "It's nice to get your name up on the banner with an elite group and gives me confidence that I can wrestle with anybody in the state. But I'm hoping our team can accomplish some of the goals we set for this year."
Recently at the District 11 team duals at Freedom high school on the first weekend of February, the Trojans took second place, falling just short to champion Nazareth 28-28 on criteria. But Parkland bounced back to defeat Liberty 36-27 (the second win over the Hurricanes in three matches that day) to take the silver medal and qualify for the state tournament in Hershey.
In the three matches on the final day at 152 pounds, Ortman pinned Dan Castro of Liberty twice, and pinned Dane Guggenberger of Nazareth.
The Trojans went on to win four matches in the state team tournament, finishing one win away from a spot in the third-place match.
Ortman used what he learned from the upperclassmen last year, to take on the leadership role as a senior this year.
"Our seniors last year were really good at getting us motivated," noted Ortman. "Seeing that for the last three years, it's now my turn along with Naze [Haddad] and Ethan [Lizak]. We need to lead the team, and they have been feeding off of us. Once we get one kid going it's hard to stop us."
Haddad also reached 100 wins this year, and Lizak accomplished the feat last season.
Under the leadership of it's 100-win contingent, Parkland went 12-1 in the regular season, losing only to league and district champ Nazareth.
Ortman is preparing for District 11 Class AAA tournament, which begins Friday, Feb. 21.
"I really just try to keep a clear mind when I'm wrestling," Ortman added. "I don't think about anything or look at results. Just go out there with a full heart and know that I can compete with anyone in the district."
Ortman is the defending AAA district champ at 138, winning by a 3-2 decision over Charles Sell of Bangor last year. He also advanced to the final of the Northeast Regional before falling to Joe Galasso of Father Judge for second place.
Ortman has not decided on a college yet, but is looking at Division II state schools including Bloomsburg and Lock Haven.
