Thirteen talented chefs prepared their favorite chili and brought it to Ebenezer United Church of Christ Feb. 9 for a chili cook-off.
Tammy Rex, director of Christian Education, announced the winner, and in an embarrassingly happy moment, Pastor Kevin Fruchtl was picked.
He and Susan Christ were going back and forth about whose chili was best and, at least for this day, Fruchtl was ahead.
The cook-off was a fundraiser for the church's Christian Education Program a fun way to raise money, Fruchtl said.
"We were trying to come up with something different to have some fun and get the community together," he explained. "It is just fun and I thought Tammy [Rex] did a great job."
Fruchtl received a certificate for winning and a $25 gift card for, where else, Chili's Restaurant.
Already, there was talk by those attending the chili cook-off of having a pie-tasting contest.
Following the contest, Germansville resident Wayne Frey told the pastor his anniversary was missed with the church announcements that morning.
He and wife, Ruth, are celebrating 60 years of marriage on Feb. 13.
Fruchtl quickly made the announcement.
