Fire department contains blaze in Northampton

Several fire companies in the area responded to a fire Friday morning at a row home in the 1900 block of Washington Avenue.

Northampton Borough Fire Chief Robert Solderich said the fire was reported shortly before 11 a.m. at 1926 Washington Avenue. Smoke was seen billowing from the roof area. Along with volunteer firefighters from the borough, fire companies from East Allen, Allen and Lehigh townships and North Catasauqua were among those on the scene.

The entire block was filled with fire trucks and ambulance and rescue vehicles, including Northampton Regional EMS.

A man, woman and their son, Solderich said, escaped from the fire, which was mostly confined to the basement. A parakeet and cat were also rescued safely from the house. One of the occupants was transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. None of the volunteer firefighters were injured. Solderich said the fire was under control in a half-hour or less.

According to Solderich, one of the occupants had a metal can which was pierced. Solderich said the person, whose identity was not released, traveled to the first floor kitchen. The can was located near the basement furnace. Solderich said it was likely fumes from the contents of the can, located near the furnace, set off the fire.

Papers and materials in the cellar were damaged. There was minor damage to the kitchen. An estimate of damages was not immediately available. Solderich said the owner of the premises resides in Florida.

The blaze was contained due to the quick response of the firefighters.
