Freedom boys win two

Heading into the final meet of the regular season, Freedom High school's boys swimming team scored two victories last week, a 93-82 win over Central Catholic and a 103-66 win over Moravian Academy.

Individual event winners for the Patriots in the meet against the Vikings were Connor Harrigan in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.26 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.27, Sam Magnan in the 100 free with a time of 50.38, Peter Conzola in the 500 free with a time of 4:56.32, and Andrew Conzola in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.07.

The Patriots also won all three relays, events which score the most points.

Peter Conzola, Brandon Burnette, Harrigan, and Magnan opened the meet with a 1:47.77 victory in the 200 medley relay.

Peter Conzola, Shjon Watlington, Harrigan, and Magnan later won the 200 free relay in 1:36.01, just .21 seconds ahead of the relay team from Central.

Magnan said, "Pete had the lead, and I'm pretty sure Shjon held it. A Central kid passed Connor, and then I dove in about a body length behind and caught up to him, and out-touched him."

The 400 free relay was just as close.

Tyler Higgins, Magnan, Peter Conzola, and Watlington won the last event of the day in 3:30.57, just .37 seconds ahead of the relay team from Central.

"We didn't think it was going to be that close, but we still got the job done. It was exciting because it was the last event," said Magnan.

In the meet against Moravian Academy, Harrigan, Trevor Watlington, Peter Conzola, and Higgins led off with a 200 medley relay victory in 1:51.74.

Higgins took first place in the 200 free with a time of 2:00.94, and Cameron Bell placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.48 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.47.

Peter Conzola out-touched Magnan in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.77, and Magnan out-touched Moravian Academy's Daniel Weekes in the 100 free with a time of 50.02.

Shjon Watlington won the 500 free with a time of 5:15.22, and Trevor Watlington won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.63.

Freedom's final meet of the regular season is scheduled for Wednesday, when they will host the Liberty Hurricanes.

This meet was moved up a day because of potential for snow Thursday.
