To help residents brace for the snow and icy conditions of February, Lehigh County Emergency Services sent out a press release earlier this month, urging residents to be prepared for extreme weather emergencies.

Here are several tips the county is offering to aid in this process.

Be sure to check your family's emergency supply kit for needed supplies. Find a complete list of items to include in your kit at www.ready.gov/ build-a-kit. Every family member, including pets, should have at least a 72-hour supply of non-perishable food, water, medications and other everyday items.

You should have an identical kit for your car and place of employment. Include a family emergency plan with your kit. This will include how each family member will get to a safe place, communicate and directions on what to do for specific situations.

Having a communication plan will be needed as well. Teach all family members to text, for text messages can bypass Internet disturbances, as a phone call cannot. For information on how to write an emergency plan contact the government website at www.ready.gov/ make-a-plan.

It's important to stay on top of weather conditions and news during an emergency. Be sure to have batteries on hand for a radio in the event of a power outage.
