Frigid temperatures could not deter groundhog aficionados from gathering at Wehr's Dam, South Whitehall, 7 a.m. Feb. 2 to watch Yahdee and his grandson, Lee, sled down the frozen Jordan Creek.

Members and supporters of Grundsau Lodsch 16 awaited the groundhog's weather prognostication at this seventh annual event.

As fans arrived, they were treated to cookies and hot beverages.

Grundsau Lodsch Nu. 16 Am Jahden Haaptmann (president) David H. Adam of Orefield opened this year's ceremony by welcoming everyone in Pennsylvania German.

After singing some songs, including "Jesus Loves Me," the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and "She'll Be Coming "Round the Mountain," and saying the Pledge of Allegiance in both Pa. German and English, it was time for Yahdee and Lee to make their appearance.

Staying close to the creek's edge and sledding slowly down the creek, the pair arrived shortly after 7 a.m.

Loud cheers of joy went out as Adam reported Yahdee's prediction that warmer weather will arrive in March.

Tradition has it that Yahdee, who only speaks Pennsylvania German relays his prediction to Lee, who then tells Adams.

Yahdee and Lee will be the guests of honor at the annual banquet of Grundsau Lodsch 16 at 6:30 p.m. March 7 at the Schnecksville Fire Company.
