FBLA: Local schools have winners
Several local students are among the Regional Leadership Conference of Future Business Leaders of America's recent competition winners who qualify for April 1 State Competition, Hershey.
Notre Dame HS first place winners are J. Karam - Intro to Business Communication; M. Peyrek, Word Processing; Z. Hogan and A. Marone, Business Ethics; and N. Wertz, Future Business Leader. Other awards were second place:J. Hibshman, Accounting I; third place: M.Gallo, Insurance Risk Management and L. Young, Agribusiness; fifthplace: K. Capella, Business Math; V. Ez, Networking Concepts; M. Trovato, HealthCare Administration; and N. Schrantz, Help Desk.
Other ND students who placed at the competition are fourth place winners D. Collina, D. Gallagher and T. Gallagher, Entrepreneurship ; fifth place: E. Hammel and L. Ruane, Hospitality Management; Sixth place: N. Kita, Intro to Business; sixth place, S. Maldonado, C. McGuire and A. Valkenburg, Sports and Entertainment Management; and sixth place, S. Mehta, Business Law.
Liberty HS winners are West Holtermann, Business Communication; Cheyenne Diaz, Insurance and Risk Management; Josh Cohen, Digital Video Production; Team event: Natalie Hart, Evan Smith and Matt Tkacik, Global Business. Josh Cohen who was elected secretary of Region 28's 14 schools.
Freedom HS winners are first place: Rey Anaya, Accounting I ; fourth place: Nate Colon, Accounting II; third place:Bin Wang, Accounting II; fourh place: Natalie Rold, Business Calculations; third place: Justin Ruela, Business Math; first place: Carol Lin, Business Math.
Liberty: Hong wins tech award
Juliana Hong, LHS '15, is one of 13 Philadelphia area students selected as a recipient of the 2013-14 National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. The awards ceremony will be held at Villanova University in April.
Homework: Help available
Moravian College students are offering free tutoring in all subjects, help with homework or just practice reading from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at the Bethlehem Area Public Library, 11 W. Church St. The drop-in program is for students in grades K-12.
Notre Dame: Speech and Debate winners
The Notre Dame High School Speech and Debate Team competed in the Allentown Diocesan Forensic League Tournament on Jan. 11 at Phillipsburg HS. Abigail Marone broke the school record for National Forensic League points with 1,436 points, surpassing by one point the previous record held by Natalie Prager, '13.
Winning awards who won awards were Sara Prager, second and Kelsey Rosa, third place, both in Oral Interpretation; and Abigail Marone, first and Joseph Wetzel, third place, both in Student Congress. Bronwyn Foran participated in the Oral Interpretation category.
The team was represented at several tournaments from January 24 to 26. At the Barkley Forum at Emery University, Atlanta, Ga., Abigail Marone, the first Notre Dame student to compete in this tournament, won a semifinalist award in Student Congress.
At the Ridge HS Invitational, Basking Ridge, N.J., Joseph Wetzel won sixth place in Student Congress and Kelsey Rosa was a Semifinalist Award in Prose. She also competed in Poetry. Other cN.D participants were Ryan Carrigan, Student Congress, and Bronwyn Foran, Poetry and Prose.
Freemansburg ES: Votes needed
Freemansburg Elementary school is participating in the Jan Brett Free School Visit contest. Please go on her website to "like" her on Facebook for our school. The website is http://www.janbrett.com/index.html. The school or library that has the most parents, teachers, friends and supporters who "like" Jan Brett on Facebook will win a free authors visit for the 2014 - 2015. Contest ends April 11. One vote per person allowed.
Gov. Wolf: Teachers get grants
Governor Wolf's first grade teachers Lisa Young, Kim Donatelli and Danette Walters) received a Crayola grant. Along with a lot of Crayola goodies, they will also receive $300 to complete a grade level project. Fifth grade teachers Stacey Leon, Kathy Shermetta and Mike Delluva received a Bethlehem Area Education Foundation grant to support their DaVinci Integrated Arts Week project.
Freedom: Student makes Regional Chorus
Freedom HS Choir student Ian Bethmann performed this past week at the PMEA District 10 Chorus Festival. Ian has placed ninth in PMEA District 10 as a Bass 2 and will go on to represent the district at the PMEA Region Chorus Festival in Chambersburg Feb. 13-15.
Freedom: Swimming/Diving fundraiser
Sicily Pizza, located at 4460 Easton Avenue, is sponsoring the Freedom HS Patriot Swimming and Diving team fundraiser. All orders through Feb. 28, when the Freedom Swimming and Diving team is mentioned, will generate a 15 percent donation to the FHS team.
Liberty: Recycling fundraiser under way
Special Education students are raising funds for their program and also for the local Animal Shelter. Please save all your newspapers, cardboard, old books, magazines, used worksheets and paper. We have access to a shredder so if you have papers you want shredded we can take them too. When you have a box full please bring them to Liberty HS and drop them off in the brown dumpster located in the small parking lot between the science wing and classroom center.
