Haddad gets 100th win
Nezar Haddad has had a year to remember. The two-sport senior athlete finished a successful football season in the PIAA tournament in Decemeber, just two wins shy from the state final, but hasn't taken a break since.
"As soon as the football season ended on Saturday, he was in the gym working out Monday," said Parkland head wrestling coach Ryan Nunamaker.
Haddad helped guide the Parkland football team to a share of the Lehigh Valley Conference title and a District 11 championship. The senior was a key member of the defense, starting as a shutdown linebacker.
On Monday, January 13 at Freedom, Haddad collected his 100th win as a wrestler as part of a successful career and senior year.
"It's a big milestone as far as individual stats," said Haddad. "It's something that you are always trying to reach from freshman year on out. Every year you look back on your wins and want to get to 100. I look at my brothers like Ziad who had 130 and it's a competitive edge thing because I'm trying to surpass that."
Haddad's older brother Ziad was a 100-win member at Bethlehem Catholic and currently wrestles at Kutztown University. Another older brother Tarik is a defensive end at East Stroudsburg University and wrestled at Parkland. Younger brother Omar is a junior wrestler at Parkland.
Eclipsing the milestone as a senior is something Haddad can use it to motivate the younger wrestlers on the squad as they try to capture glory in the state tournament starting this week.
"They look at it and see how rewarding it is and how good of a feeling it is and just work towards it," said Haddad. "It sets an example for the rest of our team for the sophomores and juniors who are going to be leaders of our team next year. We want to have a 100-win individual year in and year out."
The Trojans recently took second place at the District 11 duals, losing a close match to Nazareth, but qualifying for the state duals tournament.
Haddad made some adjustments from his junior year to his senior year that have helped him become a better wrestler.
"I think it's a mental focus," said Haddad. "I did a lot of stuff over the summer that has prepared me for college-type atmospheres. It's helped me focus a lot more and become a better wrestler this year. It's been hard working but definitely rewarding."
Haddad will continue his wrestling career at Drexel University next fall.
