LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Chief: no homeless people in borough

The frigid cold weather in January has prompted some in Northampton to question if the borough has a place for those without a residence or living on the streets.

"We have no reports of anyone homeless in the borough," Police Chief Ron Morey recently said.

Morey added the police have not found any men or women living on the streets so far this winter.

The borough has not designated a shelter to house the homeless.

Morey said it has been awhile since borough police have been in contact with anyone homeless. According to Morey, the last contact with a homeless person was two or three years ago.

"The Salvation Army in Allentown is where we take or would take someone homeless," Morey said.

Morey said a homeless person would camp out near the banks by the Lehigh River or next to the railroad tracks.

Morey has not received any notice from the many churches in town of any reports of a homeless person needing shelter. Some churches have collected coats and cold weather clothing for the needy.
