McCarthy sets record

Liberty freshman swimmer, Julia McCarthy, set a pool record in the 100 breaststroke at Nazareth last week in the Patriots' 118-68 victory over the Blue Eagles.

"I was really happy. It was a goal I set for myself," McCarthy said.

McCarthy's time was 1:09.02, her best time by a few tenths of a second.

"When I was on the last lap, I was scared I wasn't going to make it because I was in a lot of pain, so I tried to speed up. I'm really happy," she said.

McCarthy also won the 200 free in 1:58.58, beating second place finisher, Maddy Blair from Nazareth, by .24 seconds, and Hurricane teammate, Kayla Drago, by .55 seconds.

"Kayla and Maddy were right with me the whole time, and the last few strokes, I sprinted," said McCarthy.

Other individual event winners for the Hurricanes were Jocelyn Baker in the 200 IM with a time of 2:21.84, and the 500 free with a time of 5:23.40, and Rachel Rider in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.50.

The Hurricanes also won the 200 medley relay when Rider, Chloe Kobus, Emily Cecchini, and Anita Kundu combined for a first place finish in 1:58.34, and the 400 free relay when Drago, McCarthy, Baker, and Kundu combined for a first place finish in 3:49.71.

Brenna McCornac won the diving event with 186.70 points.
