Zack Bradley nears 100-win mark

In the past, Zack Bradley admittedly was nervous before each of his matches.

But times have changed, and life situations have adjusted well for the Catasauqua senior as he embarks in the final stage of his high school career.

Bradley, who has wrestled primarily at 160 for the Roughies this winter, is ready to add his own chapter in the Catty wrestling records as he is two wins away from 100 for his career when he took to the mats Thursday night in the District 11 Class 2A team championships in his own gymnasium.

The fifth-seeded Roughies were scheduled to meet 12th-seeded Wilson in the opening round of the team championships with the winner aligned to meet fourth-seeded Northern Lehigh in the quarterfinals.

Before the district team championships, Catty was eliminated from the Colonial League championships when they dropped an opening round, 56-13 decision to Saucon Valley. Bradley was among the few Roughie wrestlers who recorded a victory, as he registered a 4-2 decision over Devon Fontanez, whom Bradley is likely to meet again in the future when districts begin in mid-February.

"We knew what Saucon (Valley) was," offered Bradley about the match. "We wanted to win as many individual battles as we could. But they have a solid program at this point. We have also made a lot of progress and we're looking to close the season on a good note.

"We have a number of guys here who have been wrestling for quite some time, as we have a solid group of newcomers who are working hard and have really developed over the past few weeks. There are a number of guys who are out on the mats for the first time for us."

As for Bradley, he has shaken off some early cobwebs after a slow start - primarily due to the football team's deep run in the postseason - and rejuvenated himself to the point of an unblemished 25-0 mark after a 1-3 start that he brought into the team championships.

Being two wins away from the century mark, Bradley continuously has tried to not let the milestone bother him.

"I had trouble at the start of the season and it was jumping right into it after finishing football," recalled Bradley, who finished sixth at districts last season. "I just wasn't with it then. But I got everything together and I feel really good right now.

"I feel that I am where I should be. I try not to think about getting the 100 wins and just go out there and wrestle. I used to get nervous, but I have really overcome that problem. I just have to go out there and try to do whatever I can to win.

"I'd like to end my wrestling career the same way that I ended my football career and also gain some honors in the process."

With districts on the horizon, Bradley also has avoided any injuries this winter as he did throughout the football season, and believes he can make a trip to Hershey in the spring.

"I am and feel 100 percent right now," said Bradley, who will attend Shippensburg University next fall to play football. "I'm keeping my fingers cross that I won't have any injuries especially at this point of the season.

"I've been focused and know I can keep this going."
