WHS edges Bears
Even on an afternoon when their offense had a hard time gaining traction, the Whitehall girls basketball team found a way to win.
Furthermore, on a day when they scored only one field goal in the third quarter, they found a way to win.
Moreover, in a game where leading scorer Taylor George couldn't find her stroke from the perimeter, they got contributions across the board and found a way to win.
And even though the game went into overtime after Pleasant Valley tied the game with a lay-up at the buzzer, the Zephs didn't let that basket deflate them, eventually holding on for a 38-34 win on a snowy Saturday at Zephyr Gymnasium.
"We found a way," said head coach Dwight Repsher whose team is now 6-9 on the season. "We made foul shots when we had to make foul shots."
One of those players who hit some crucial free throws down the stretch was Ivanna Jones. After the Lady Bears tied the score with 1:55 left, guard Jillian Rex poked the ball away and dished it to Jones who was fouled on her lay-up attempt. She sank both free throws to give them a 27-25 lead. Jones made seven of eight from the charity stripe, with five of them coming in the fourth quarter. She also had one in overtime.
Jones made a number of key plays, grabbing big rebounds late, both offensively and defensively. She finished with nine points.
Ashley Barber also made her presence felt, especially in crunch time. She grabbed two key rebounds, one with under a minute left in regulation and another in overtime with 18 seconds left that helped cement the win.
She led the Zephs with 12 points, and was a forceful presence inside throughout the game.
Still, the Lady Bears kept clawing back. Pleasant Valley guard Caroline Scott hit a big three to draw them within one, 29-28. However, the Zephs quickly extended their lead when Barber sank one of two free throws, making it 30-28.
Then Pleasant Valley executed a play that will make coaches hair turn prematurely gray. They drove the length of the floor and sank a lay-up just as the clock turned red.
Repsher said that in those instances, the girls need to move their feet and keep the player in front of them.
Despite that lapse, Repsher said they played "pretty good defense."
"We rebounded the ball for the most part," said Repsher. "We did what we had to do."
In the overtime, George went to work. She got fouled en route to the basket, draining the free throw for a three-point play, and then connected on another pair of free throws after she was hacked on an inbounds play. Her five points all came in the overtime session.
The Zephs also got crucial points from LeAnna Cruz who hit a jumper from the corner to give the Zephs the lead back after P.V. went on an 11-0 run.
Additionally, Karly Klein added four points on two field goals, while Jillian Kreglow chipped in with four as well, her points coming via a field goal and two free throws.
Repsher said that their inconsistency may have been a carry-over from Friday's game against Allentown Central Catholic High School. They lost that game 53-23
"I think their confidence was a little shaken," he said. "We missed some shots, but somehow we got in done."
Repsher said that Saturday's win showcased their ability to find offense from a number of players.
"It's not just one person," Repsher said. "It's a little bit of everybody, and that's where we need to be."
They persevered, and that's been the storyline of the second half of their season.
With Lehigh Valley Conference action resuming Monday night versus Freedom High School, the Zephs lost a close game, 43-37. That differential matched the differential in the fourth quarter as they were outscored by six points, only managing two points in the final frame.
In that game, George led the Zephs with 13 points, while Cruz had six. Additionally, Klein, Kreglow, Jones and Rex all chipped in with four.
