Township police investigating robberies

Whitehall Township police detectives are investigating four robberies that took place December 2013.

In a report to the township's board of commissioners, Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said a Lehigh County grand jury has been convened in a case where two individuals were severely injured in a March 2013 home invasion robbery.

Police Chief Linda Kulp said the case, investigated by the detective division, involved an intruder who caused serious injuries to a man and woman in their residence. The case is currently before the special county panel. The suspect in the case was not named.

Regarding the four robberies, one incident involved a man who gained entry into a residence by telling the homeowner he needed to use the telephone because his vehicle broke down. The suspect then stole cash and fled the scene. The victim was not hurt , nor was a weapon observed during the incident.

In another case, two unidentified men entered a business and robbed two store employees of an undetermined amount of cash. The suspects were described as a Hispanic man and woman. The pair fled in a small black vehicle. Neither employee was hurt in the incident, according to police.

Detectives are also investigating a store employee robbed by a man in the parking lot. The robbery took place as the employee was en route to make a deposit of funds from the business. The suspect was described as a man wearing a hoodie. The victim was not hurt.

A store employee in a another incident was attempting to take a retail theft suspect into custody when the suspect brandished a knife. The man dropped the stolen merchandise and fled in a black SUV vehicle. There were no injuries to the store worker, police said.

A fraudulent check ring which hit Walmart involving 40 fraudulent checks is under investigation. There are 19 persons identified as suspects. Two women were also cited with passing counterfeit checks at Walmart following an investigation by township detectives.

An investigation of a possible rape that took place in a township apartment is continuing. A suspect was named, but the alleged victim is not certain she wants to prosecute the alleged offender.

A case was closed by detectives as unfounded following an investigation of possible abuse at a local day care center.

A possible rape involving two school students is under investigation as are five burglaries and one attempted burglary, involving five homes and one apartment. One arrest has been made where the intruder was apprehended inside the house.
