East Hills: Book discussion Jan. 29

Join the book discussion - "Last Child in the Woods" by Richard Louv - with teachers Martha Christine, Linda Frederick, and Mona Koury-Elias about getting students outside to learn during the school day. They will also be sharing ideas about starting and maintaining school gardens and nature areas. The discussion will take place at East Hills MS Library, Jan. 29 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

County Chorus: Festival Jan. 31

Looking for something to do on a chilly January evening? Please join select members of the Freedom and Liberty choirs as they represent the district in the Northampton County Chorus Festival at Nazareth HS Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.; tickets will be available at the door.

Fountain Hill: Pancake benefit Feb. 1

Help the kindergarten classes at Fountain Hill Buzz to the Zoo with a pancake breakfast at Applebee's. Breakfast is scheduled for Feb. 1 from 8 to 10 a.m. at Applebee's. To buy tickets, contact jginsberg@beth.k12.pa.us or tickets can be purchased at the door.

Winter Classic: Outdoor hockey Feb. 5

The Bethlehem Winter Classic outdoor hockey game of Freedom vs. Liberty/Southern Lehigh is set for Feb. 5 at the Bethlehem Municipal Rink on Illick's Mill Road. Doors open at 6:30, Puck drop at 7:15. Tickets sold at both schools.

Liberty: Hong wins tech award

Juliana Hong, LHS '15, is one of 13 Philadelphia area students selected as a recipient of the 2013-14 National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing. The awards ceremony will be held at Villanova University in April.

Homework: Help available

Moravian College students are offering free tutoring in all subjects, help with homework or just practice reading from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at the Bethlehem Area Public Library, 11 W. Church St. The drop-in program is for students in grades K-12.

Notre Dame: Speech and Debate

The Notre Dame High School Speech and Debate Team competed in the Allentown Diocesan Forensic League Tournament on Jan. 11 at Phillipsburg HS. Abigail Marone broke the school record for National Forensic League points with 1,436 points, surpassing by one point the previous record held by Natalie Prager, '13.

Winning awards who won awards were Sara Prager, second and Kelsey Rosa, third place, both in Oral Interpretation; andAbigail Marone, first and Joseph Wetzel, third place, both in Student Congress. Bronwyn Foran participated in the Oral Interpretation category.

Freemansburg ES: Votes needed

Freemansburg Elementary school is participating in the Jan Brett Free School Visit contest. Please go on her website to "like" her on Facebook for our school. The website is http://www.janbrett.com/index.html. The school or library that has the most parents, teachers, friends and supporters who "like" Jan Brett on Facebook will win a free authors visit for the 2014 - 2015. Contest ends April 11. One vote per person allowed.

Gov. Wolf: Teachers get grants

Governor Wolf's first grade teachers Lisa Young, Kim Donatelli and Danette Walters) received a Crayola grant. Along with a lot of Crayola goodies, they will also receive $300 to complete a grade level project. Fifth grade teachers Stacey Leon, Kathy Shermetta and Mike Delluva received a Bethlehem Area Education Foundation grant to support their DaVinci Integrated Arts Week project.

Freedom: Bethmann makes Regional Chorus

Freedom HS Choir student Ian Bethmann performed this past week at the PMEA District 10 Chorus Festival. Ian has placed ninth in PMEA District 10 as a Bass 2 and will go on to represent the district at the PMEA Region Chorus Festival in Chambersburg Feb. 13-15.

Freedom: Swimming/Diving fundraiser

Sicily Pizza, located at 4460 Easton Avenue, is sponsoring the Freedom HS Patriot Swimming and Diving team fundraiser. All orders through Feb. 28, when the Freedom Swimming and Diving team is mentioned, will generate a 15 percent donation to the FHS team.

Liberty: Recycling fundraiser under way

Special Education students are raising funds for their program and also for the local Animal Shelter. Please save all your newspapers, cardboard, old books, magazines, used worksheets and paper. We have access to a shredder so if you have papers you want shredded we can take them too. When you have a box full please bring them to Liberty HS and drop them off in the brown dumpster located in the small parking lot between the science wing and classroom center.
