Melosky, Zephs win close one
Matt Melosky has a habit of saving his best for last.
The senior forward took the game over in the final minutes for the Zephs, helping them pull one out of the cauldron against Wilson West Lawn High School on Saturday night.
The 46-45 win was another entry into a season filled with games that went down to the wire, and Melosky's clutch jumper with six ticks left on the clock- his sixth point in a span of one minute- sealed the fate of the late-charging Bulldogs.
Earlier in the season, his six points in the final two minutes against Emmaus helped spark their comeback that was capped by an Aaron Keglovits three. This time he had to take the reins when Keglovits fouled out, taking the ball down the lane for each of his field goals.
"Toward the end, Keg, he fouled out, and we're both two captains so I knew I had to step it up," said Melosky, who finished with a team-high 15 points. "I just took the ball in my hands and made some clutch shots at the end, and got us the win."
The win also ended their three-game losing skid, pushing their overall record to 10-6.
Melosky's points were especially crucial since Wilson's Travaun Coad was poised to become the lead in the story. He almost single-handedly brought the Bulldogs back after trailing throughout most of the game. His ability to slash into the lane, got him baskets at the rim or put him on the foul line. It was his three-point play after getting fouled on a lay-up that put the Bulldogs ahead for the first time, 39-38, with 4:40 left in regulation.
However, Keglovits answered right back on a drive of his own, floating in a lay-up to give them the lead once again, 40-39.
But Coad's determination to put his stamp on the game gave them the lead right back as he was fouled en route to the hoop. He sank both to give them a 41-40 lead.
That's when Melosky went to work. After a timeout, he threaded his way into the lane and put up a soft jumper that found twine. He did that twice more as Coad was doing his best to give Wilson the come-from-behind win.
Melosky knew it was imperative to put the clamps on Coad. He was willing to go one versus five down the stretch to spark his team.
"We just tried to stop him," said Melosky. "We knew he was coming in; he's good, he's quick, and we just had to try and put him on the foul line and hope he would miss some."
Coad's basket to make it 45-44 with 19.6 left set the stage for Melosky's heroics. However, Melosky's game-winning shot almost didn't happen.
"I bobbled it at first," said Melosky. "Then I picked it up and my man, I think Buzzy [Jacob Buskirk] was boxing him out, and I kind of just floated one up."
The first half was characterized by good ball movement and the Zephyrs looked like they had the game in hand, leading 24-16 at the break. It was an impressive start against a team that was 16-1 heading into the contest.
"We executed our offense in the first half as well as we have probably all year," said head coach Jeff Jones. "It was excellent. We had terrific shots."
Jones said they were finding the open man, and with a few more field goals could have put the Bulldogs in a real bind.
"Our message at halftime was we're executing fantastic and if we continue to do that, I think we're going to be successful," said Jones.
While Wilson didn't shoot the ball well in the first half, Jones knew they had the players who could change that in a flash. He said a couple of those players were deadly from beyond the arc so they had to be ready for a run.
"I knew they were going to make some shots, and they did," said Jones. "Coad is extremely quick and he's a really talented player."
Coad's aggressiveness got them in foul trouble, leading to Keglovits early departure, but they "hung in there."
When Wilson began to ratchet up their defense in the second half, trapping and running a full-court press, Jones said that it sped the game up, with the Bulldogs trying to dictate the rhythm. Jones felt the Zephs responded well, with Chad Rex making sure the team stayed on track.
Rex finished with eight points, while Jacob Meyers, Brett Radocha and Gianni Sinatore each chipped in with five. Additionally, Keglovits and Buskirk added four apiece.
With both teams in the bonus on the Zephs final possession, Jones said they ran their normal set which is spreading the floor and attacking the rim. As their offensive scheme unfolds, they have the opportunity to drive, get fouled, or kick it out for an open jumper.
"Matt was able to get all the way to the rim, and as a credit to him, he made it," said Jones.
Melosky said beating the top team in Berks County could be a good steppingstone as they head into a slate of games this week.
"If we just keep playing like we are right now, and win out, we'll get Parkland in the final game for LVC north," said Melosky.
