Matos, girls still look for positives
Janae Matos recently realized that her senior season at Catasauqua is heading down the home stretch. With field hockey behind her, basketball is beginning its final chapter and Matos wants to try and do her share to contribute some positive notes in the upcoming weeks.
One of a handful of seniors in the program, Matos believes her squad can salvage some positives despite a 15-game losing streak that began the week.
"Even though we're not getting the wins, we have seen noticeable improvements," said Matos. "Everything has been much more positive, and (head coach Dave Troxell) has been more complimentary of what we are trying to do."
Still, life on the basketball court for Matos and her teammates has been trying.
"Yes, it has been frustrating," declared Matos. "We have been working very hard, but we just haven't been able to finish games. We've been competitive and have had our share of games when we've had leads.
"We're still learning how to win games. But we have games left against teams in which we were really close. We have a game against Northern Lehigh, and we lost to them by one point the first time."
Along with Matos, her teammates will also be counting the days. However, softball - her main passion in sports - lies ahead.
"All of us seniors have realized that we have days left," said Matos. "Most of us have been playing together since third grade. It's just an eerie feeling we have to deal with. "
Troxell certainly will miss Matos and the rest of the senior class.
"She (Matos) is one of the hardest working girls we have in the school and she is a true leader," said Troxell. "As a coach, she is the type of player you want to have on your team every year. She never gives up and always stays positive."
Matos plans to pursue her softball career in college where she will also begin studies in a criminal psychology major. She has narrowed her college choices to Moravian and Wisconsin Lutheran College.
Yet, Matos is leaning toward the college in Wisconsin that has similarities to her hometown.
"(Wisconsin Lutheran) contacted me through my recruiting video on line," stated Matos. "My parents took me on a weekend trip, and I just fell in love with the campus. It is a small town and a small campus. It reminded me of being here.
"I don't want to go to a large college where you can get lost in the flow of things. I'd like to make relationships that I can keep."
When she isn't playing sports, Matos is an avid reader and also enjoys watching her favorite show, "Criminal Minds," the latter that inspired her college major.
But Matos isn't ready to write off the basketball season.
"We think we can get a couple of more wins," said the point guard. "Personally, I'd like to be able to score more to contribute to the team."
Whether she does or doesn't, Matos certainly has left her mark.
