Council sets goals for 2014
In its first meeting of 2014, Hanover Township Council set goals for the year.
"In 2014, I want to bring respect and integrity back to council. The past year was difficult for the township and for members of council," said Council Chairman Bruce Paulus. "I ask each member of council to take a copy of the charter and to highlight those areas that need to be changed or deleted. I believe our charter should not contradict state law," he said.
Any changes to the charter need voter approval.
Solicitor Jackson Eaton instructed council that any changes need to be presented to the Board of Elections by April 8.
Due to new members on council, Eaton asked for a private session to present background information on issues impacting the township.
Joseph Heimbecker, newly elected council member and vice chairman, stressed his commitment to open government.
"I would like to see more of the community at the meetings. I think we can collect emails and send an email blast to residents inviting them to the meetings and to let them know what decisions council makes," he said.
Heimbecker invited residents to his home if they had any questions.
Councilman Curtis Wegfahrt echoed the approach.
"We aren't that hard to find," he said.
Heimbecker proposed a State Troopers Appreciation Day.
"We owe these people a lot for what they do. We should get to know these troopers better," he said.
A tentative timetable will put the event on the May calendar.
Township Manager Sandra Pudliner will coordinate with state police officials and coordinate the details.
"We have a newsletter that goes out in April and we can announce the event to residents," she said.
