Hornets blank Liberty/ Solehi
Emmaus goalkeeper Michael Smoker has been the anchor in goal all season for the Hornets.
But despite posting a 3.55 goals against average and 282 saves in 11 games heading into Monday night's matchup against Liberty/ Southern Lehigh, there's one thing Smoker was still in search for this season - a shutout.
That all changed in the Hornets' most recent game.
Smoker - who recorded 19 saves in goal for the Hornets - provided solid goaltending all night as Emmaus (8-3-1) routed Liberty/ Southern Lehigh (1-10-1), 10-0, on Monday night at Steel Ice Center in the Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League (LVSHL)
"I felt real good today," Smoker said. "We got a good warm up in, and all the shots I was seeing easily. Most games we just try and dominate, and that we did. For the shots I got in the zone today, they were from good distances, and they didn't let them get in that close."
The win was Emmaus's fifth straight. Before the Hornets started their current winning streak back on Dec. 9 against Central/Becahi, the two teams previously faced off to a 3-3 tie in early December.
"Just getting the win tonight is another one in the record," Smoker said. "We'll just try and build on every win we can. Obviously we have Parkland our last game, and that's going to be our tough one."
It didn't take long for the Hornets to let their opponents know this result would be vastly different.
Chad Lawrence netted a goal in the game's first two minutes that started the Hornets' scoring barrage that included four first-period goals. Just 1:50 after their initial goal, Jeremy Hoffer added his first of three goals to make it 2-0 with 12:36 remaining in the first.
David Andrews found David Bailey for a goal nearly two minutes later, and Nicholas Capizzi added a score of his own in the period's final seconds.
"We couldn't take any game lightly," Hoffer said. "We just had to come out hard and play competitive.
After adding three more goals in the second period - coming from Nico Martel, Matt Heffelfinger and David Andrews-Hoffer and the Hornets added a statement in the third period. Matthew Kulger recorded an assist on Martel's goal.
In the span of 55 seconds, Hoffer then showed his quick scoring ability with two late goals, bringing his season total to a team-high 12 goals. He first scored on a breakaway with 3:37 remaining, and then added another goal moments later. Bailey added his second of the game to make it 10-0 with 1:22 to play.
"I just tried to play relaxed a little bit, and stop trying so much," Hoffer said. "I tried to stay back a little bit."
