Zephs continue trend upward
With a few weeks remaining in the regular schedule before the anticipated district and state meets, Whitehall's swimming program continues to make plenty of waves in the positive direction.
"We have been doing very well," said head coach Pete Rile. "Recently, we have had a number of new qualifiers for districts. Our girls are where they should be, and our boys have been near the .500 mark and that has been a big surprise with their ongoing number problems.
"We'll look to keep moving forward toward a positive finish in districts and states."
In a recent meet against Easton, Mina Feyrer captured both the 100 freestyle and backstroke and teammate Alexus Merkert won the 100 butterfly. Both Feyrer and Merkert advanced to districts and states last season and are on track to make a return trip.
"Mina (Feyrer) and Alexus (Merkert) are having good seasons and the ones that we expected," added Rile. "They both have qualified and should be able to finish the season strong. As returnees, they both have also been leaders on the team this season."
Feyrer also sees a similar ascent with her team.
"We had a number of swimmers coming back and we expected to do well," said Feyrer. "We have been competing well with the better teams and now teams respect us. We expect to have a number of swimmers at districts and states."
Rile stated that six girls already have qualified for states and two boys have also done the same.
"We thought we would have that many girls qualifying," said Rile. "Right now, we have three more boys who are very close to qualifying. We should have a very good contingent going to districts."
Down the road, Rile expects some more positive results. They have meets against Central Catholic and Freedom scheduled for this week.
"I think we are in a good position right now," said Rile. "We have had good meets against Emmaus and Parkland and it proved something to the kids. We basically started pretty fresh with our boys program and they have really done much better than expected.
"We have some meets left and we should continue to swim well."
